First Day of SightseeingShort URL
Well today I decided to leave my dorm, and go out and see the city on my own. It was the first day with sunshine since I arrived here in San Francisco, and I must say I felt a lot more comfortable with living here after seeing what an almost perfect day could look like. So I jumped on the first cable car that I saw, just a few blocks from my dorm, and got a free ride down to Fishermans Wharf. Kind of cool hanging on the outside while rolling up and down the steep hills, my biggest worry was that my crumpler bag would get caught in a car parked next to the rails or something, but it all went well :) The ride from Powell to Fishermans Wharf doesn’t take more than about 10 minutes, and on the way you go past Lumbard street, so that’s where I jumped off and took the picture in the top of this post. It’s pretty crooked, that’s for sure, and I’ll be shure to drive down there when my friends come over this summer.
Then I went downhill to FW, and it’s pretty steep. I took the last picture almost at the bottom, just to give you an idea..
At FW I got my first real view of the Rock (Alcatraz), and the Golden Gate. I had to take a picture of all of them off course, including the sign for Fishermans Wharf – which was actually bigger than I had imagined. I went to Pier 42, also called “Bubba Gump Shrimps” – at least that’s what the sign said, and I got to see the seals in the bay.
I took a few pictures of Alcatraz and Golden Gate from Pier 39 also, which had a better view.
Next week I plan to take the ferry out to the Rock with Morten, who moved here just last week as well. I’ll be taking some more pictures then.
When on my way back I saw the 45 min wait for the cable car rides, and so to save time I just walked right up the street to the first stop and waited for the first one to arrive. I actually had to jump on it while it was moving, which was a bit of a fun thing to do. I’m not sure the driver was very impressed with it, but what the heck. It’s once in a lifetime right. I also realized, what many of you might not know. Cable cars are only a tourist attraction, and the cost $5 each way, so people who live in SF rarely use them for transportation. I didn’t know that, and kind of disappointing..

The pictures bring back memories of our visit in 1984, your dad, aunt and grandpa, – and me of course……. I’m so glad to read that you’re doing OK. Love, grandma.
